Beings as it was the last Sunday together before Christmas, we did mostly songs that were celebratory and upbeat. We do not have a choir, but we put together one for this Sunday’s gathering. We also had children do a special and we added some live drama. Topically, not your typical Christmas message. Pastor Frank went into greater detail about the role of Simeon, not only as he beheld the Lord’s Christ, but also his faithfulness in waiting on God’s promise. Here is the set/flow list.
- “Joy to the World”(Unspeakable Joy) in D to E.( Probably one of my favorite Tomlin songs of late.)
- WELCOME
- “Emmanuel” in C
- “Oh Come, All Ye Faithful” in G
( The previous 2 we did with just piano for a change)
- “Silent Night” (children)
- “Jesus,What a Wonderful Child” in F/Gb/G (Mariah Carey version)
- “A King is Coming to Town” ( From Geron Davis’ “Sing Joy” project. I was blessed to be on staff at Grace Baptist in Knoxville that recorded the project.)
- MESSAGE (part 1)
- Simeon Video
- Simeon Live Drama
- MESSAGE (conclusion)
- Invitation special
- “You Came” in Dm; Travis Cottrell’s project, “All Fall Down” (We also tagged it with “Grace Like Rain”-same key and chord progression)

About 10 minutes before “go time”, our players took the initiative to softly play a moving rendition of “What Child is This”, just tastefully jamming on it. I meet with the pastor and some of our deacons each Sunday to lay hands on the pastor and pray for God’s fame for that morning. What a wonderful blessing it was to witness the band led of the Spirit before I was even out of the prayer room. The term worship “leader” can be a very relative term…praise the Lord!
We usually start a little differently than some churches in that we pray and ask God to inhabit our praise and enable us to be liberated and real before we even start to play. There are even some people still finding their way to their seats. But sometimes we just throw “format” out the stained glass window and do what we feel God wants at that moment, not any more so than so many of you, our fellow worshipers do. Needless to say a great morning!!! So, getting on to the set:
“You Are Good” in E straight into an original version of “Angels We Have Heard on High” also in E. We did loop back around to end with one last chorus of “You Are Good”.
After the welcome:
“God of this City”- C
“Majesty” – C
“Holy, Holy, Holy” – D
Pastor Frank then delivered a great lesson based on “Fear Not”. A timely message when we comnsider the amount of fears that can beset so many at the season.
We closed with Kristan Stanfill’s “Jesus Paid it All”.

As a side note (many of you may have already done so) but I am planning on creating “commitment/invitation” song notebooks to keep at each player’s station because there are so many times a pastor will end in a way that you know the perfect song to play for a time of commitment, but you may not have played it since before the inception of the cut capo. Most of these are familiar enough and therefore run smoothly when a lead sheet/chart is made available. Just a thought!

God Bless, God Inspire and God be the Glorified!
Jeff

What can possibly be said about a God so merciful that He removes the distraction of physical pain while I led worship?! I am meeting with a surgeon tomorrow about operating on several herniated, bulging and ruptured discs along with arthritis and other issues. But I did not want to be denied the honor and blessing of leading worship in His courts! And just as I KNEW HE WOULD, he not only took away the pain during that time, he allowed me the honor of falling on my face before Him…without pain! We were singing “At the Foot of the Cross” by Kathryn Scott and I was so moved by the line “coming to kiss the feet of mercy” that I asked our congregation what our response to that verse would be if Jesus, in flesh, stood before us. I, for one, would be unable to resist falling prostrate to “kiss those beautiful feet of mercy”. As I knelt for a few moments I realized that I felt no pain and no discomfort in my back. Even when we bow in honor of His mercy, He shows even greater mercy. Lord, there is none more holy. Father, there is none so loving. Abba, there is none more patient and Jehovah, I am yours…neverending.

We are blessed to have at our church people who can step in and step up. Dear brothers and sisters in the worship arts I am in need of prayer support. For the first time in 10 years I was unable to lead worship due to a health issue. I am going in for an unexpected back surgery just weeks before Christmas. As our church runs about 400 you as worship leaders understand the limited manpower available. Of course I have the peace of knowing beyond all doubt God has ordained this. One of the biggest lessons I have learned is that when a situation gives you less time than you think you need it gives God more availability to do what he wants. To God be all glory and fame! I pray for all of you as you seek God’s will as we prepare this Christmas!

Our set this week was:

Freedom Ring – E (am original)

Nothing But the Blood – Am (Original “Santana – latino” version)

I Need The Every Hour – G (Origianl arrangement)

Enough – G

Amazed- D (Jared Anderson)

Special Music: Oh How He Loves (Crowder) sang by Jessaka Biolosi and Lindsey Ciresi

***** If you would like MP3s or charts of any original songs or arrangements, just contact me.*****

Interesting note: Lindsey was in the last 15 on the program “Gospel Dream”. I am producing a demo for her right now as one of the producers from the show is wanting to hear more from her. She is a very grounded young lady and a true worshiper.

Our Pastor, Frank Ciresi (yeah, Lindsey’s dad) is continuing a series on Matthew chapter five and yesterday he was on verses 27-32, which is the sections where Jesus taught that looking upon a woman to lust after her is adultery. He did an amazing job and was a great service!

This morning’s set at University was:

Let the Praises Ring-E
Friend of God-E
When I Think About the Lord-D
Surrender (L.Brewster)-G
I Surrender All – D

Songs such as “When I Think About the Lord” lend themselves to many intro variations, all of which bring our thankfulness the Lord to the forefront. Sometimes starting powerfully with the chorus or subtly, such as we did today with our pianist and lead guitarist only. Actually, at some point I would like to embed personal testimonies between verses.

Also “Surrender” into “I Surrender All” is a favorite tandem of songs that teach us this war is the only one we win by surrendering! All in all a great morning!

In a previous blog, I shared the set for Sunday was going to be acoustically driven since our drummer was out (on a much deserved get away with his family).
The songs were:
“Hosanna”
“Agnus Dei”
“At the Foot of the Cross”
“We Fall Down”
“Jesus Paid it All/O Praise the One”
It was one of those Sundays where I was almost expecting smoke to start filling temple! One up-side to playing acoustically is the blessing of hearing the congregation so clearly. Their voices were strong and clear and many had their hands lifted in a posture of surrendered worship.
This is a wonderful paradigm shift of sorts as our church was very, very traditional a few years ago. To be able to step back off mic and hear the voices filling the auditorium brings a wonderful sense of unified connectivity with God. By the time we were at “O Praise the One” I was personally overwhelmed by His presence and was one of the people who just wept openly. A wonderful moment in the life of this church as well as the life of this worship leader/servant.

To those who read this blog, I suppose I should tell you a little about myself. My name is Jeff Davis and I am the worship pastor at University Baptist Church in Jacksonville, FL. Before that I was the associate worship pastor at Grace Baptist Church in Knoxville, TN from 2002-2008. I have been married to an amazing lady, Kim, since 1988 and we have two daughters Ally (born in 93) and Marybeth (born in 1998). I am blessed with a family who were willing to obey the Lord with me after living their entire lives in Knoxville.

I lead on electric and acoustic guitar and occasionally from piano (mostly on specials). We are contemporary in our song selection and do several selections from Lincoln Brewster, Hillsong, Gateway, Chris Tomlin and many of the Six Step Records artists. We do enjoy doing hymns which we sometimes re-arrange and other times play them traditionally. I have no “formula” or “ratio” in regards to when a hymn is scheduled. It is completely defendant upon the Holy Spirit.

Okay, SO FINALLY to this week. Our drummer will be out and we decided it might be a good time to “break the mold” and do more acoustically driven sets:

Hosanna (Hillsong) – E

Agnus Dei – A

Welcome / Announcements

At the Foot of the Cross – E

We Fall Down -E

Jesus Paid it All / O Praise the One – B

I will share the service experience with everyone next week.

Here is a great flow from “Majesty” in “God of This City” that we use. I am usually not a big fan of overlapping songs because the end result can be confusion and not very musical. However, this is sweeeeet.

End with part of the praise team softly repeating “Here I Am” (first line of the verse with the Am – G – F ), after two times have the other half of the praise team begin “God of This City” with “There is no one like our God”, also Am – G – F as we do it in C). Here is the road-map:

1/2 team sings “Here I Am” twice

Rest come in, overlapping “There is no one like our God” – 2 times

All sing, “There is no one like our God” – 2 times and continue to chorus….

Be Blessed, Be Led, Be Real

Jeff
